Why does the same twenty-four hours appear endless when you’re seven, but disappear so quickly when you’re forty?

Picture trying to explain this to someone who has never experienced time the way we do.

The clock always ticks at the same pace. The Earth keeps spinning at its usual speed. Still, nearly every adult agrees that time feels like it speeds up as we grow older.

It sounds odd, and it really is.

Quick Answer:

Time doesn’t really speed up as we get older. Psychologists think it feels that way because adults have fewer new experiences, make fewer unique memories, and each year turns a smaller part of their lives.

To find out why, I looked over years of psychological studies, old theories, and recent neuroscience to see why so many adults feel this way.

But that’s just the start. The real explanation involves memory, new experiences, attention, and the curious way childhood summers seem to last endlessly.

🍃 Act Two: The Puzzle
Remember what it was like to be ten years old.

Summer vacation felt like it would never end. Two months could feel like a whole lifetime, full of new friends, bruised knees, and days that just blended.

Now, think about last year.

Where did all that time go?

You might remember a few birthdays, a couple of trips, maybe a promotion, a move, or some other milestone. But everything else seems to blur together.

The calendar hasn’t changed. A year is still 365 days, whether you’re seven or seventy.

So why does it feel like time keeps speeding up, year after year, without us even noticing?

Here is the simple version, but keep in mind that scientists do not all explain this feeling in the same way.

One main idea is that your brain does not measure time like a clock. Psychologists think our sense of time depends on attention, memory, emotion, and the number of new experiences we have.

As a child, almost everything feels new. There are new schools, new friends, new smells and sounds, and even new emotions you cannot name yet. Your brain works hard, creating rich and detailed memories all the time.

Having more new experiences usually means you remember more details. When you look back, these extra details can make a period of time feel longer.

Here is something surprising. During a normal week, your brain might decide that almost nothing is worth remembering in detail. That does not mean the week was unimportant. It just means your brain has seen similar weeks many times before.

Now think about adulthood. The commute stays the same. The coffee request does not change—the meetings, the routines, and the Tuesday that looks just like last Tuesday all blend. Your brain saves effort by not recording every small detail.

This is not a flaw. It is your brain being efficient.

Still, efficiency always comes at a cost.
When our days feel the same, they leave fewer memories behind, and that can make a whole year seem to pass by more quickly.

Years before brain scans or MRI machines, the French philosopher Paul Janet noticed something interesting. Many adults felt that life seemed to speed up as they got older. In 1897, he introduced what we now call the relative theory of time.

His idea was simple. We judge a year not just by how long it is, but also by how much life we have already lived.

For a five-year-old, one year feels like a big part of life. For someone who is fifty, that same year is just a small piece of their whole life.

Janet suggested this might explain why summers in childhood feel so long, while adult years seem to pass quickly. The years themselves do not get shorter. Instead, each new year is a smaller part of our whole life.

For a long time, this idea stayed inside the realm of philosophy. Later, psychologists began to study these questions more closely. They looked at how people of different ages judge time, how new experiences affect that judgment, and why familiar times seem shorter when we look back. Over and over, they found that new experiences, unfamiliar places, and learning new things cause time to feel richer and more memorable.

🍃 Act Five: A Counterintuitive Example
This part feels a bit backward.

When you’re on a week-long vacation, it commonly feels short. You’re busy, happy, and always on the go, so the days seem to fly by.

But months later, that same vacation can feel surprisingly long when you remember it.

Why is that? It’s probably because your vacation had more unique moments than a regular week at home: new streets, new food, new conversations, new routines, and new surprises.

While you were there, the week might have felt quick.

But when you look back, it can feel full and much longer.

This difference between how we experience time and how we remember it is one of the strangest things about the whole topic.

  • When people feel stressed or depressed, time can seem to move slowly. This is different from how routines usually cause time to feel.

  • Even small changes such as trying a new route, picking up a new hobby, or visiting a new place can make a week or month stand out in your memory.

Most researchers agree that memory is important, but they are still debating how the brain creates our sense of time.

Some studies point to attention, while others examine emotion, body awareness, or how the brain integrates events after they occur. Likely, several processes work together rather than a single system handling everything.

This uncertainty is not a flaw in the science. In fact, it is part of what makes the question so interesting.

We do know that our sense of time is real, measurable, and essentially human.

We simply do not have a final answer yet.

🍃 Act Eight: Why This Matters
This isn’t just an interesting fact.

If learning how memory shapes time inspires you to try something new this week, then this everyday mystery has already made a small difference in your life.

Maybe that’s the real point. It’s not about beating time, but about giving yourself more moments that are worth remembering.

The next time you come across yourself wondering, “Where did this year go?” try to pause for a moment.

That feeling is not only about getting older. It could be your brain’s way of telling you that many of your recent days have begun to blend.

You are not simply losing time.

Your mind might be sending you a signal.

Maybe the solution is not to wish for more time.

Maybe it is about giving yourself more moments that are worth remembering.

Try one small experiment this week: take a different walking route, eat lunch somewhere unfamiliar, or do one ordinary thing in a new way. Then notice whether that day feels more distinct in memory than the others.

  • Why do some smells bring back memories so strongly?

Maybe time isn’t actually moving any faster.

Maybe it’s just that our memories have become a little quieter.

Maybe that’s the real invitation—to keep noticing, keep exploring, and keep finding ways to make typical days memorable.
